What makes work integration successful?

Powercoders has been supporting individuals with a migrant or refugee background for almost 10 years now, training them and helping them find opportunities to start their careers in Switzerland. Does that make us experts?

We started with one coding bootcamp and 15 participants at the beginning of 2017. From this first pilot to today, we have continually evolved and are currently adapting to changes in the market and in society.

Life is change, and being able to adapt is a key ingredient for sustainable success. That’s not only true for our organisation, but also for everyone in our community and beyond.

Which brings me to the second secret ingredient of success – shh, I am sharing company secrets here 😉 It’s people:

  • Our participants and alumni, who are motivated and passionate about building their lives in Switzerland. Full of resilience and potential.
  • Their families, who support them during this intense time. Full of trust and love.
  • Our volunteers, who want to help and make our world a better place. Full of dedication and purpose.
  • Our company partners – and especially our HR contacts, the team leads, and everyone who believes that resilient talents can be found and grown. Full of vision and pragmatism.
  • Our team members, who are looking for purpose and working for greater impact. Full of conviction and heart.

Work integration is successful when people who truly want to make it work meet – and when everyone is at eye level. Powercoders believes in empowerment: strengthening existing skills, equipping people with tools, building trust, and opening doors. In the end, people on both sides have to walk through those doors and meet.

So, is that it? Be flexible, adapt, and empower others?

Don’t get me wrong, we are not talking about an altruistic fairyland world here. Our Powercoders team members appreciate being paid a fair salary; our volunteers wish for acknowledgement and visibility for their help; our participants want a job, and our company partners want talent. Opening doors helps because everyone in this game wins.

Making work integration work is about this fine balance of goodwill, the desire to make the world better, and the very human, practical goal of getting something out of it. And this win‑factor – this “getting something out of it” for everyone involved – is fluid and always changing.

Right now, the Swiss tech landscape looks completely different from when we started. The rapid evolution of AI and shifting market demands mean that junior tech roles are changing fast. Bootcamps that rely on outdated models are disappearing.

That is why it is time for Powercoders to launch an intentional phase to redesign our flagship work integration program. Not by starting from scratch, but by taking our proven ingredients of success and making them work for 2027 and beyond.

Follow along over the coming months as we share our reflections and learnings behind the scenes as we shape this next chapter.
